Supreme Court Set for New Appointments as Collegium Recommends Five Names.

The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended the elevation of four Chief Justices of High Courts and one Senior Advocate as Judges of the Supreme Court. The strength of the Supreme Court judges was increased to 38 recently. Presently, the  Supreme Court is functioning with 32 judges.

Two additional vacancies are expected shortly with the retirements of Justice JK Maheshwari and Justice Pankaj Mithal in June.

The names recommended by the Supreme Court Collegium are as follows: 

  • Justice Sheel Nagu
  • Justice Shree Chandrashekhar
  • Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva
  • Justice Arun Palli
  • Senior Advocate V Mohana.

The appointment of Sr. Adv V Mohana will add to the women's representation in the Supreme Court. The Court presently has only one woman judge, Justice BV Nagarathna. After August 2021, no woman has been appointed to the Supreme Court.
