{"id":6580,"date":"2024-12-12T03:57:00","date_gmt":"2024-12-11T22:27:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lawfultalks3.selfst.art\/lawyers-urge-bombay-hc-to-reconsider-single-use-plastic-restrictions\/"},"modified":"2026-07-21T17:15:31","modified_gmt":"2026-07-21T11:45:31","slug":"lawyers-urge-bombay-hc-to-reconsider-single-use-plastic-restrictions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lawfultalks3.selfst.art\/?p=6580","title":{"rendered":"Lawyers Urge Bombay HC to Reconsider Single-Use Plastic Restrictions"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p style=\"margin-left:0px; margin-right:0px; text-align:center\"><span style=\"font-family:Georgia,serif\"><strong><em><span style=\"font-size:18px\">Bombay HC&#39;s Go Green Initiative Under Review?<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n \n \n \n <p style=\"margin-left:0px; margin-right:0px\"><span style=\"font-family:Georgia,serif\"><span style=\"font-size:16px\">Bombay High Court lawyers have advocated for the revocation of the single-use plastic ban on the court campus, addressing a letter to the Chief Justice of Bombay HC, urging the adoption of a more pragmatic approach.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n \n \n \n <p style=\"margin-left:0px; margin-right:0px; text-align:center\"><span style=\"font-family:Georgia,serif\"><span style=\"font-size:16px\"><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n \n \n \n <p style=\"margin-left:0px; margin-right:0px\"><span style=\"font-family:Georgia,serif\"><span style=\"font-size:16px\">The letter arises out of a circular issued on<span style=\"background-color:#ffffff\"> July 24, 2024 which was issued to prohibit the possession of <\/span><strong><u><span style=\"background-color:#ffffff\">&quot;single-use plastic bottles and bags&quot;<\/span><\/u><\/strong><span style=\"background-color:#ffffff\"> within the High Court, in a bid to reduce plastic waste.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n \n \n \n <p style=\"margin-left:0px; margin-right:0px\"><span style=\"font-family:Georgia,serif\"><span style=\"font-size:16px\">The signatories have contended that the ban has had an counterproductive impact and have caused significant <span style=\"background-color:#ffffff\">difficulties for litigants, lawyers, and visitors.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n \n \n \n <p style=\"margin-left:0px; margin-right:0px\"><span style=\"font-family:Georgia,serif\"><span style=\"font-size:16px\"><span style=\"background-color:#ffffff\">It states that, <\/span><strong><em><span style=\"background-color:#ffffff\">&ldquo;This rule, while undoubtedly well intentioned, has caused significant hardship to litigants, lawyers, peons, clerks and other visitors to the premises, and may in fact be counterproductive: a. It is observed that individuals entering the court premises (including senior citizens, and litigants who have undertaken a long journey to come to the High Court) are being forced to discard &ldquo;single-use&rdquo; plastic bottles, citing the aforementioned ban.&rdquo;<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n \n \n \n <p style=\"margin-left:0px; margin-right:0px\"><span style=\"font-family:Georgia,serif\"><span style=\"font-size:16px\"><span style=\"background-color:#ffffff\">The letter also highlights the lack of widespread awareness of such a rule as there is no such notice mentioned on the High Court website or at its gates to inform visitors about the new restriction.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n \n \n \n <p style=\"margin-left:0px; margin-right:0px\"><span style=\"font-family:Georgia,serif\"><span style=\"font-size:16px\"><span style=\"background-color:#ffffff\">Further, the letter also points out the irony of rule, where the confiscation of water bottles at the High Court gates leads to hundreds of bottles being collected and discarded each day has led to an increase in plastic waste at the High Court.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n \n \n \n <p style=\"margin-left:0px; margin-right:0px\"><span style=\"font-family:Georgia,serif\"><span style=\"font-size:16px\"><span style=\"background-color:#ffffff\">Additionally, the letter also raises concerns about insufficient safe drinking water at the court, with outdoor filters exposed to contaminants and no safety information. The only bottled water, sold at \u00e2\u201a\u00b950 for 300 ml at the Bombay Bar Association, is unaffordable for most visitors.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n \n \n \n <p style=\"margin-left:0px; margin-right:0px\"><span style=\"font-family:Georgia,serif\"><span style=\"font-size:16px\"><span style=\"background-color:#ffffff\">Ultimately, the signatories have requested that:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n \n \n \n <p style=\"margin-left:0px; margin-right:0px\"><span style=\"font-family:Georgia,serif\"><em><span style=\"font-size:16px\"><strong><span style=\"background-color:#ffffff\">&ldquo; A. The ban on possession of single use plastic bottles be revoked;<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n \n \n \n <p style=\"margin-left:0px; margin-right:0px\"><span style=\"font-family:Georgia,serif\"><em><span style=\"font-size:16px\"><strong><span style=\"background-color:#ffffff\">b. Steps be taken at the earliest to make free, potable drinking water easily available on the High Court premises (with adequate, multilingual signage to direct people to such water sources).
