{"id":6671,"date":"2025-03-24T09:30:00","date_gmt":"2025-03-24T04:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lawfultalks3.selfst.art\/sc-halts-eviction-of-19000-street-vendors\/"},"modified":"2026-07-21T17:17:40","modified_gmt":"2026-07-21T11:47:40","slug":"sc-halts-eviction-of-19000-street-vendors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lawfultalks3.selfst.art\/sc-halts-eviction-of-19000-street-vendors\/","title":{"rendered":"SC Halts Eviction of 19,000 Street-Vendors"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><span style=\"font-family:Georgia,serif\"><span style=\"font-size:16px\">Recognizing that hawkers deserved to be treated with respect and dignity, the Supreme Court&rsquo;s Division bench of <strong>Justice Vikram Nath <\/strong>and <strong>Justice Sandeep Mehta<\/strong> granted interim protection from eviction to<strong> 19,000-odd street vendors<\/strong> in Pimpri-Chinchwad, Pune, Maharashtra. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n \n \n \n <p style=\"text-align:center\"><span style=\"font-family:Georgia,serif\"><span style=\"font-size:16px\"><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n \n \n \n <p style=\"margin-left:0px; margin-right:0px\"><span style=\"font-family:Georgia,serif\"><span style=\"font-size:16px\">In October 2023, Respondent No. 1, Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation, requested a minimum of six weeks to carry out the process under the Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Act, 2014. Nearly a year later, in September, the Corporation reported that the final list of 19,792 street vendors had been prepared as of 07.02.2024. However, citing financial limitations and resource constraints, it sought additional time to accommodate all the vendors on the list.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n \n \n \n <p style=\"margin-left:0px; margin-right:0px\"><span style=\"font-family:Georgia,serif\"><span style=\"font-size:16px\">Observing that the Corporation&#39;s exercise was still ongoing, the Court ordered that the status quo regarding the possession and functioning of street vendors be maintained until the process is completed.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n \n \n \n <p style=\"margin-left:0px; margin-right:0px\"><span style=\"font-family:Georgia,serif\"><span style=\"font-size:16px\">&ldquo;<strong><em>The exercise to accommodate the 19792 street-vendors or 14000 and odd street-vendors, as pointed out by the learned counsel appearing for the respondent Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation, is continuing.
