{"id":7032,"date":"2025-04-23T05:48:00","date_gmt":"2025-04-23T00:18:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lawfultalks3.selfst.art\/make-bus-stops-accessible-and-inclusive-for-differently-abled-promptly-bombay-hc\/"},"modified":"2026-07-21T17:28:36","modified_gmt":"2026-07-21T11:58:36","slug":"make-bus-stops-accessible-and-inclusive-for-differently-abled-promptly-bombay-hc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lawfultalks3.selfst.art\/?p=7032","title":{"rendered":"Make Bus Stops Accessible And Inclusive For Differently Abled Promptly: Bombay HC"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><span style=\"font-size:16px\"><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;\">In a move that will bring much needed succour to differently abled individuals&rsquo; plea for better accessibility at bus stops, the Bombay High Court has directed the State Advisory Board On Disability to <span style=\"font-family:TimesNewRomanPS-BoldMT\"><strong>promptly<\/strong><\/span> address grievances raised by them and take <span style=\"font-family:TimesNewRomanPS-BoldMT\"><strong>&ldquo;appropriate action for the redressal of grievances of disabled people&rsquo;&rsquo;.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n \n \n \n <p style=\"text-align:center\"><span style=\"font-size:16px\"><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;\"><span style=\"font-family:TimesNewRomanPS-BoldMT\"><strong><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n \n \n \n <p><span style=\"font-size:16px\"><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;\">A division bench of <span style=\"font-family:TimesNewRomanPS-BoldMT\"><strong>Chief Justice Alok Aradhe and Justice MS Karnik<\/strong><\/span> instructed the dvisory Board after the hearing a combination of a suo moto petition and a Public interest litigation (PIL).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n \n \n \n <p><span style=\"font-size:16px\"><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;\">The suo moto matter focused on the barriers caused by bollards at the entrances of footpaths, which obstructed access for disabled individuals.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n \n \n \n <p><span style=\"font-size:16px\"><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;\">In the previous hearing, the Bombay Municipal Corporation (BMC) informed the Court that <span style=\"font-family:TimesNewRomanPS-BoldItalicMT\"><strong><em>&ldquo;it had removed all bollards from the entrance of the footpaths.&rdquo;<\/em><\/strong><\/span> The BMC further mentioned that those with grievances could bring them to the attention of the Assistant Commissioner of the Local Ward Office.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n \n \n \n <p><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;; font-size:16px\">The State government also informed the Court that a State Advisory Board On Disability had been constituted and that a meeting of the Board had taken place to discuss <\/span><span style=\"font-family:TimesNewRomanPS-BoldMT; font-size:16px\"><strong>&ldquo;policies benefiting disabled individuals.&rdquo;<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n \n \n \n <p><span style=\"font-size:16px\"><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;\">The PIL called for the implementation of the <span style=\"font-family:TimesNewRomanPS-BoldMT\"><strong>&#39;Harmonised Guidelines and Space Standards for Barrier Free Built Environment, 2021,&rsquo;<\/strong><\/span> focussing primarily on accessibility at bus stops and terminals in Mumbai.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n \n \n \n <p><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;; font-size:16px\">These guidelines stipulate that <\/span><span style=\"font-family:TimesNewRomanPS-BoldMT; font-size:16px\"><strong>&ldquo;at least one accessible route should be provided from the alighting and boarding point of the bus stand to the walkway that leads to the accessible building entrance.&rdquo;<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n \n \n \n <p><span style=\"font-size:16px\"><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;\">The document also includes specifications of features like bus seat design, shelter placement, and location standards.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n \n \n \n <p><span style=\"font-size:16px\"><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;\">During the current hearing, the BMC reiterated that <span style=\"font-family:TimesNewRomanPS-BoldMT\"><strong>&ldquo;all bollards at the entrance of footpaths which were causing obstructions and were inaccessible to the differently able have been removed.&rdquo;<\/strong><\/span> Additionally, the State submitted the minutes from the Advisory Board&rsquo;s meeting.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n \n \n \n <p><span style=\"font-size:16px\"><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;\">Taking note of the whole issue, the Court instructed the State Advisory Board to consider the concerns raised in the PIL regarding bus stop accessibility.
